|Industry Comment||Meat canning was taking place in the US after the 1820's, but the industry did not flourish until the 1840's. The tapered meat tin was patented in 1864. Arthur A. Libby and J. Wilson of Chicago, Illinois, purchased the patent rights for the tapered meat tin, though the patent had existed for nearly 10 years when this took place. Libby eventually bought out Wilson to have exclusive rights to this container. Tapered tins dating from 1875-1876 are usually from Chicago, but not always. Prior to 1890 they were opened with a knife, though afterwards, and certainly by 1895 they were opened by a key-wind strip attached just above the base of the can at the larger end.|
